Auckland, NZ, September 1st, 2021 - Fast-growing New Zealand legal-tech start-up Sortify.tm plans to further expand its international reach as part of a transformational investment from major Australasian IP Group, QANTM Intellectual Property Limited.

Sortify.tm will build on the global reach of its direct to consumer (D2C) online trade mark registration platforms as well as its suite of online trade mark tools that incorporate artificial intelligence and automation, which are currently used by trade mark attorney and law firms in Australia, New Zealand, USA, UK, Singapore and Canada.

In a transaction announced to the Australian Securities Exchange in Sydney today (September 1), QANTM will pay $AUD11 million for Sortify.tm in an investment that is expected to complete on 30 September 2021 and will fund the company’s ongoing expansion.

Sortify.tm will continue operating from its New Zealand base, including staff, operations, and further research and development. QANTM’s capital investment will enable extension of Sortify.tm’s products into new technology and services offerings, as well as expansion into new geographic markets and new applications.

Founded in 2017 by trade mark lawyers Claire Foggo (CEO), Alan Potter (Head of Product Development) and Narly Kalupahana (Director), Sortify.tm automates the entire trademarking process in striving to make brand protection accessible to everyone. Its market-leading technology transforms the trademarking process for brand owners, trade mark lawyers and trade mark registries.

Through its online registration solutions, including DIY Trademarks in New Zealand and Trademarks Online in Australia, brand owners can enjoy real-time assisted trade mark filing. Sortify.tm delivers effective brand protection to anyone, with or without specialist trade mark knowledge.

CEO of Sortify.tm Claire Foggo says: “We’re genuinely thrilled to become part of QANTM. As soon as we began talking with the QANTM team, it was clear we shared values, particularly around culture, people and our overall vision to make trade mark protection accessible to all.”

QANTM believes there is very strong strategic and cultural alignment. “Sortify.tm is uniquely positioned to accelerate QANTM's technology transformation program and digitalisation and help capture new market opportunities the Asia-Pacific region,” said QANTM Managing Director and CEO, Craig Dower.

Sortify.tm files more trade marks for local Australian and New Zealand businesses than any other trade mark provider in Australasia through its related brands:

  • DIY Trademarks is the No. 2 filer of NZ trade marks
  • Trademarks Online is the No. 3 filer of Australian trade marks

It has recently started to scale online trade mark registration globally, with the launch of Trademarks Online and Trademark Planet offerings in the UK.

The modular nature of many of Sortify.tm’s products will allow easy implementation into QANTM businesses and provide productivity gains, as well as improved client experience and service over the coming years.

“Being part of QANTM will allow us to accelerate development of our online trade mark registration business by tapping into the significant expertise of QANTM’s trade mark lawyers and attorneys across Australia and South East Asia,” adds Claire Foggo. “Drawing on our own experience in legal tech and automation, our exceptional development team will also be working with QANTM’s firms to help drive its innovation programme. This is an area where we can make a significant contribution quickly, all while we continue to build the technology solutions we believe will change the trade mark world.”
